A newsletter for people interested in finding new ways to look at art & the world. Agua de jamaica not included.
Welcome to Mexican Heaven, a newsletter from José Olivarez.
Inner Hater: But José who are you anyway? And why do you need a newsletter?
Answer: Those are good questions, inner hater. I’m a writer and trash talker and a fanatic of many things. Currently, I’m into the Naruto anime series and courtesy of The Last Dance, I’m renting a home in 90’s Nostalgia. I’m starting this newsletter because I’m looking for a place where I can work through my ideas on various topics. And because I believe in public discourse, I’m hoping these attempts will be useful to people beyond myself. And I’m looking for help. I hope this space will be interactive. A spot where we can come together to toast one another and challenge each other. Also, as someone who doesn’t have a formal degree in poetry, I’m hoping to demystify the arts world. I remember clicking on a link to submit poems and not knowing how to write a cover letter. If not for a friend who shared his cover letter template with me, I might have stopped trying to get published. So maybe you have a question you don’t know where to ask, come through. Or maybe you love poems and art and want a space to talk about it? Me too; come through.
Inner Hater: Okay. But what if I don’t want to talk about art?
Answer: That’s fine. This newsletter will also feature some thoughts about Latinidad, politics, sports, and music. I don’t want to brag too much, but I have good taste.
Inner Hater: Yo, why is this newsletter called Mexican Heaven?
Answer: Occasionally, I’ll share bits of my Mexican Heaven. Whether that’s a new recipe that I loved or a gif that I’m loving. Besides, Mexican Heaven is a good title.
Inner Hater: Alright, so what are the logistics.
Answer: You can expect a newsletter twice a week.
Inner Hater: Are you gonna try to charge me for this.
Answer: Honestly, I don’t know. As a freelance artist, I do wonder if this might be a way to stabilize my income. But right now, I’m more interested in the experimentation and conversation that this might bring.
